I have collected cell phones for many years now and my students don’t complain and they agree that it actually helps them! I always meet my students at the classroom door the very first day of class and tell them they can bring them in but have to put in the collection box, or they can leave them in their lockers. They always comply and I never have to battle the smartphone use.

I too have a total cell phone ban in my classrooms. I started a few years back with a cell phone holder on the side wall with a power bar underneath where students can charge their phones. It’s immensely helpful and students rarely complain. Many students have said what yours did: that they appreciate the break from their phones and are doing a lot better in class because they can focus. Good work!
